TRIESTE – The Waalvliet, one of the latest sailing cargo vessels, recently docked at the Port of Koper.
The ship is a general cargo vessel operated by Dutch company Hartel, delivered in 2025 and designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption thanks to an innovative wind-assisted propulsion system.
Currently being loaded via rail tracks, the vessel measures 89.43 metres in length and features a single hold of 60.9 metres, with a deadweight capacity of approximately 3,800 DWT. The most innovative aspect is the pair of vertical structures at the bow: these are Econowind rigid windfoils – a new generation of adjustable sails that rotate with the wind and generate aerodynamic lift similar to that of an aircraft wing. According to the manufacturer, the thrust generated is equivalent to around 80 square metres of conventional sail, helping reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Flying the Dutch flag, the Waalvliet is equipped with a removable tween deck, reinforced hull, and a flexible cargo system suitable for heavy and oversized loads. The vessel has a maximum draught of 5.25 metres and a hold capacity of 195,290 cubic feet.
