TRIESTE – Trieste becomes the headquarters of the new Friuli Venezia Giulia Territorial Directorate of the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM). Tomorrow, the Veneto regional directorate will be inaugurated in Venice.
The structure was inaugurated today in the presence of Agency director Roberto Alesse and Undersecretary at the Ministry of Economy and Finance Sandra Savino.
The establishment of the new Directorate is part of ADM’s reorganisation process, aimed at strengthening the administration’s presence in areas characterised by high trade flows and bringing services closer to the needs of businesses and citizens.
«Thanks to the territorial reorganisation of the Administration, we are strengthening the role of local offices as safeguards for legality, closer to the needs of economic operators and citizens», Roberto Alesse said.
«The inauguration of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Territorial Directorate of the Customs and Monopolies Agency represents an important step for Trieste and for the entire region. This is not only an organisational moment, but the recognition of the strategic role that Friuli Venezia Giulia plays for the national economy, international traffic, logistics and the competitiveness of the country system», Savino said.
«Trieste», the Undersecretary added, «is an entry point for Italy and Europe. It is an international port, a natural crossroads between the Mediterranean, Central Europe and the Balkans. At a time when global value chains are changing and logistics is increasingly decisive, having a strong, autonomous and rooted ADM presence here means strengthening the State’s ability to support development, guarantee effective controls and simplify relations with economic operators».
According to the Government representative, a significant part of the economic future of the North-East and of Italy passes through Trieste. Therefore, strengthening ADM here means strengthening the State, the port, businesses and the international projection of the area.
During the ceremony, the main results of the activities carried out by the regional offices were also presented. Between January and March 2026, more than 77,000 counterfeit items were seized, while operations against illicit tobacco trafficking led to the interception of 44,600 kilograms of cigarettes, preventing an estimated loss to the public purse of almost €11 million.
ADM offices also identified numerous attempted exports to Russia and Belarus of goods subject to European restrictions, including industrial components and laboratory equipment. On the technical and scientific front, the Trieste Chemical Laboratory analysed a total of 2,778 samples in 2025, using molecular biology in the identification of narcotic substances and in combating agri-food fraud.
Over the past year, Ro-Ro routes with Egypt (Damietta) have doubled and the project, developed together with the Guardia di Finanza, for an integrated Control Room to monitor flows entering and leaving the ports is moving forward.
