TRIESTE – During India Maritime Week, Italian Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi met with India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal to initiate a new phase of strategic cooperation between the two countries in the maritime and logistics sectors.

The first concrete step will be the creation of a bilateral working group made up of institutional experts and representatives from the private sectors of both countries. The group will be tasked with defining joint projects for the development of ports, integrated logistics, and supply chain security along the IMEC Corridor, which identifies the Port of Trieste as the main hub in the Mediterranean. A Memorandum of Understanding dedicated to cooperation between Italian and Indian port systems is also being prepared.

Rixi later took part in the Leaders’ Conclave, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and was a main speaker at the roundtable on transnational connectivity, where he presented Italy’s strategy to strengthen its role as Europe’s southern gateway to Asia. During his address, the Deputy Minister illustrated the “Italia 2032” plan, supported by investments exceeding €200 billion, aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing connectivity between Asia and Europe.

The mission will continue in Doha, where Rixi is scheduled to meet with the Qatari Ministers of Transport and Urban Mobility and the leadership of the Sovereign Wealth Fund to explore new investment opportunities in strategic infrastructure and sustainable mobility.
