TRIESTE – The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region will continue investing in the logistics platform of Porto Nogaro, particularly in the new rail connection serving the Aussa Corno industrial area: “A very expensive project worth €100 million, but also absolutely essential.”

This was confirmed today by the Regional Councillor for Infrastructure, Cristina Amirante, during the inauguration of the upgraded access road to the Margreth port area, carried out by the COSEF Consortium in Porto Nogaro. The works were fully financed by an extraordinary regional contribution of €3 million, allocated in two instalments: €2.5 million at the end of 2020, and €500,000 in May 2023 to account for rising prices of raw materials and energy.

The upgrades included the construction of parking areas equipped with facilities for truck drivers waiting to clear customs and access the port premises, as well as long-term parking spaces for vehicles operating inside the port. Traffic flows entering the port have also been separated to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents, which had occurred frequently in the past.

As for the new rail connection (35% co-financed by EU funds), the infrastructure is necessary because the current line passes through residential areas and runs close to public roads with several hazardous points. It also lacks a curvature radius that would allow trains to access company facilities at a safe and efficient speed. The project has already been developed at the final design and execution level, with all agreements signed at the local level and with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, supported by the Consortium.

The works inaugurated today by COSEF president Marco Bruseschi include three main interventions:

  • Construction of a roundabout to ensure safe access for all vehicles entering the port area. Previously, access was through a direct entry at the customs gate on Via Fermi, which had become a safety concern (cost: €673,000);

  • Development of a large parking area for trucks entering and leaving the port. The area has been paved and will include designated zones for air ambulance landings and customs inspections (cost: €1,342,000);

  • Replacement of guard booths and complete renovation of the port’s customs gate, as the original structures, built by the Aussa Corno Consortium about 20 years ago, no longer met modern safety and hygiene standards (cost: €985,000).

In addition to these interventions, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region is also directly overseeing the electrification of Porto Nogaro’s quay, including the installation of a photovoltaic system. This project is funded by the National Complementary Plan (PNC) and regional resources, with a total cost of €7.8 million and completion expected by June 2026.
