TRIESTE – AVM/Actv has launched a new round of hiring to strengthen the shipboard workforce employed in public transport in the Venice Lagoon. The selection calls, published between mid-November and mid-December, cover command positions and technical roles to be hired on a permanent or seasonal basis within the company’s fleet.

In mid-November, calls were issued for open-ended contracts for relief masters for motorboats and motobattelli, deck masters for out-of-lagoon motobattelli, motor vessels and ferry ships, as well as chief engineers and marine engine operators. The deadline to apply is 14 December 2025. More recently, a selection has also been opened for fixed-term deckhands, intended to cover peak-traffic periods, with applications open until 7 January 2026.

The current initiative is the third annual recruitment cycle for command roles in local public transport services. Alongside external hiring, the company also supports dedicated professional development paths for internal staff: from deckhand to relief master, and from there to deck master, chief engineer or marine engine operator. These steps have attracted strong interest among employees in recent years, backed by company programmes to obtain the required professional certificates. However, progressions still have to contend with certain constraints imposed by the regulatory framework.

At the same time, AVM/Actv is strengthening ties with local nautical training institutes, in particular VeMarS and ITS Marco Polo. The goal is to encourage young people to enter maritime professions and to create a stable pathway between school and work in a sector that needs technical skills and familiarity with the lagoon environment.

The selections are aimed at maritime professionals who meet the required criteria and are interested in working in an operationally complex environment such as Venice’s canals, islands and lagoon. It is a context that demands experience and attention, but it is also one of the country’s most distinctive public transport services.
