TRIESTE – Fincantieri is accelerating the U212 NFS submarine program for the Italian Navy. The group has signed a contract amendment with OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) a contract amendment worth approximately 317 million euros that introduces new technologies developed by WASS, expands logistical support services, and brings forward thedelivery of the fourth unit by two years, now scheduled for 2032 instead of 2034.
The agreement covers the program for the four next-generation submarines currently under construction at the Muggiano shipyard and expands the scope of work entrusted to Fincantieri. Among the key new features is the integration—for the first time on Italian submarines—of countermeasure systems developed by WASS, a group company specializing in advanced underwater systems.
The agreement also calls for an expansion of logistical support activities, with the goal of ensuring the units’ full operational efficiency over the long term. Thanks to the program revision, the Italian Navy will be able to receive a new submarine every year starting in 2029, with deliveries scheduled for the four-year period from 2029 to 2032.
According to Fincantieri, the U212 NFS program represents a significant evolution compared to the current U212A submarines. The new submarines will incorporate a greater share of domestic technology, including lithium-ion propulsion batteries and a new combat system—solutions that will improve stealth, range, operational efficiency, and cyber resilience.
The agreement also strengthens the group’s strategy in the underwater sector, which is considered one of the main areas of industrial and technological growth. Fincantieri aims, in fact, to cover the entire underwater value chain, from platform design to specialized systems and services throughout the entire lifecycle of the vessels.
Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Pierroberto Folgiero emphasized that the agreement strengthens Fincantieri’s role in the development of national submarine capabilities and demonstrates the group’s ability to translate innovation and industrial expertise into tangible progress on the program, enabling the Italian Navy to take delivery of a new submarine every year starting in 2029.
