{"id":33834,"date":"2025-05-07T19:44:38","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T17:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adriaports.com\/uncategorized\/dfds-rejects-freight-rate-war-on-the-istanbul-trieste-route\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T22:46:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T20:46:31","slug":"dfds-rejects-freight-rate-war-on-the-istanbul-trieste-route","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adriaports.com\/en\/logistics\/dfds-rejects-freight-rate-war-on-the-istanbul-trieste-route\/","title":{"rendered":"DFDS rejects freight rate war on the Istanbul\u2013Trieste route"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>TRIESTE \u2013<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfds.com\/it-it\/traghetti-merci-e-logistica\">Danish company DFDS<\/a>, which operates the Samer Seaports terminal in Trieste together with the Samer Group (Ro-Ro terminal for the Motorway of the Sea with Turkey), <strong>has raised its rates despite competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In theory, <strong>it could also reduce capacity on its routes if there is no improvement in the ongoing freight rate war<\/strong> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adriaports.com\/it\/shipping\/grimaldi-rafforza-la-flotta-fra-trieste-e-turchia\/\">Grimaldi\u2019s ferries, recently docked at HHLA Plt Italy\u2019s Logistics Platform<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis is stated in the presentation of the <strong>first quarter 2025 report,<\/strong> which shows that, <strong>after an initial price cut in late 2024 (due to Grimaldi\u2019s competitive pressure), DFDS increased its rates again in early 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>DFDS closed the first quarter of 2025 with revenues of 7.5 billion Danish kroner <strong>(approximately \u20ac1.01 billion)<\/strong>, marking an 8% increase over the same period last year. However, EBIT was negative at 117 million kroner <strong>(around \u20ac15.7 million)<\/strong>, a drop of 317 million kroner compared to Q1 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The company aims to restore profitability by focusing on its core customer base\u2014manufacturers of high-value goods such as automotive, machinery, chemicals, and textiles\u2014and by improving service reliability through additional calls on the European side of Istanbul. The intense competition caused the Ferry division\u2019s EBIT to plummet from +169 million to -9 million kroner <strong>(from about \u20ac22 million to -\u20ac1.2 million)<\/strong>, despite signs of improvement at the end of the quarter. \u201cEarnings performance improved toward the end of Q1,\u201d the company noted. DFDS expects 2025 to be a transition year for profit recovery, with weaker results in the middle quarters and a rebound anticipated by year-end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The reorganization also affects the logistics branch in Turkey and Southern Europe,<\/strong> with a streamlined network, workforce reduction from 3,700 to 3,000 employees, and the ongoing closure of offices and warehouses. \u201cTurkey and Southern Europe \u2013 downsizing of network and equipment,\u201d the document states, confirming that the turnaround remains one of the top three priorities for 2025, alongside revamping the Mediterranean services and \u201cBoost\u201d projects to improve logistics efficiency across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the challenging environment, <strong>DFDS aims to close the year with EBIT of around 1 billion kroner (approximately \u20ac130 million)<\/strong>, driven by organic growth and strict cost discipline. The Trieste terminal remains a strategic asset, but it will face stronger competition and increasing margin pressure in the months ahead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TRIESTE
