{"id":38168,"date":"2026-03-25T22:50:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T21:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adriaports.com\/uncategorized\/port-of-venice-1442-companies-27000-jobs-and-production-value-of-e15-billion\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T08:50:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T07:50:41","slug":"port-of-venice-1442-companies-27000-jobs-and-production-value-of-e15-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adriaports.com\/en\/shipping-en\/port-of-venice-1442-companies-27000-jobs-and-production-value-of-e15-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Port of Venice: 1,442 companies, 27,000 jobs and production value of \u20ac15 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>VENEZIA &#8211; Fifteen billion euro, rising to 44 when indirect effects are included.<\/strong> That is the production value of the port system of Venice (which also includes Chioggia), comprising 1,442 active companies and a total of 26,898 employees, in other words families whose livelihoods depend on the economy generated by the Venetian ports.<\/p>\n<p>The president of the Port Authority of the Northern Adriatic Sea, <strong>Matteo Gasparato, said he wants to \u00abreposition the port system by changing its perception\u00bb<\/strong>, so that \u00abVenice can once again be proud of the value of its port activities\u00bb. And from Ca\u2019 Corner, the palace overlooking the Grand Canal and seat of the Metropolitan City, he set out the figures resulting from <strong>a study carried out by the CGIA di Mestre research centre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting from the <strong>infrastructure system, Gasparato pointed out that its total value amounts to \u20ac6.4 billion<\/strong>, canal depths reach 12 metres, rail intermodality can rely on 65 kilometres of network, while motorway intermodality reaches 40 kilometres. As for the size of the port area, it covers 2,500 hectares, while the quays extend for 22 kilometres. Space was also devoted to the composition of production value, in which the lion\u2019s share comes from<strong> trade and repairs (32.2%), manufacturing activities (27.4%), followed by transport and warehousing (12.4%), professional, scientific and technical activities (6.4%)<\/strong> and then energy supply, mineral extraction, sewerage, water and waste services, construction and business rental services.<\/p>\n<p>A mosaic of activities worth \u20ac44.2 billion, distributed 54.6% in the Metropolitan City of Venice, 30.9% in the rest of the country and 14.5% in Veneto. Overall, the port contributes 6.5% to the GDP of the Veneto Region, equal to \u20ac13 billion. Looking instead at the number of companies, <strong>the 1,442 businesses operating in the Venetian ports are distributed across sectors as follows: transport and warehousing 19.6%, manufacturing activities 14.4%, trade and repairs 13.4%, rental and business services 11.1%.<br \/>\n<\/strong>Also noteworthy is the figure relating to <strong>employment, which, overall, reaches 218,853<\/strong>, though this includes both the direct and indirect value of the supply chain generated by the port economy.<\/p>\n<p>Gasparato also recalled the 2025 figures, highlighting year-on-year growth in volumes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adriaports.com\/en\/shipping-en\/a-year-of-growth-for-the-ports-of-venice-and-chioggia\/\">with 26.2 million tonnes of cargo handled (+5.1%),<\/a> 533,000 TEUs (+11.2%), 3,235 ships (+3.2%) and 735,000 passengers (+4.7%). The final figure cited by the port president concerned supply chains, pointing out that the dominant share comes from the <strong>energy sector (24.5%), followed by steel (18.4%), agrifood (9.5%), cement (8.1%), chemicals (5%) and 0.3% for abnormal loads.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the figures, the head of the Port Authority clarified that <strong>\u00abthe port community is the only real alternative to the tourism monoculture. We are faced with a system integrated with the territory, within a fabric of networks coexisting with one another\u00bb. <\/strong>He then added: \u00abPort activities are a resource for the territory, and as an Authority we want to enhance and communicate that. We have launched a \u201cport for the territory\u201d programme to bring port and city closer together again through workshops and the opening of port spaces, so as to make this reality known and experienced, so that it may once again belong to the people. We will do this together with Vela, the Municipality, associations and institutions, in order to act as a system\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>After him, <strong>Davide Calderan, president of VPC, Venice Port Community,<\/strong> took the floor and added: \u00abWe thank president Gasparato for helping us spread awareness of the importance of the port and of the need to continue investing. For years we have been striving to make people understand the value of our economy, of the activity carried out both in Venice and in Chioggia, but also for the territory and the North-East in general. We represent those 1,400 companies and 26,000 workers, people who generate an economy alternative to the tourism monoculture, for which it is necessary to make the indispensable investments required to maintain port operations. The reference is to the Malamocco-Marghera Channel, the Vittorio Emanuele Channel, the new quays, but also to the future, because the 26,000 people working today will tomorrow need replacement generations, so thanks also to the schools that include education linked to this economy. <strong>The port is no longer \u201cugly and bad\u201d<\/strong>; today it is an articulated, technological system, in which dialogue with the cities is necessary, because we must coexist with the territory, understanding its needs and guaranteeing adequate operations for everyone\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>Rear Admiral Filippo Marini, head of the Venice Coast Guard,<\/strong> it was an opportunity to reaffirm the centrality of the safety issue: \u00abWe operate in a lagoon covering 550 square kilometres with a focus on safety. Recently we issued an order based on an incremental approach to ship transits through the navigation lock. Beyond the experience of the first transits, we will increase access up to ships well over 200 metres. I applaud the initiative of the Port Authority, which gave pilots the opportunity to undertake a familiarisation course on navigation in these locks, given that we are the only ones in Italy dealing with this issue\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, <strong>CGIL too, through its secretary Daniele Giordano, welcomed the initiative, while issuing a warning<\/strong>: \u00abThe growth of the port, technological innovation, digitalisation and infrastructure investment can represent a significant opportunity, but they must be accompanied by a strong public and social safeguard.
