TRIESTE –<\/strong> New cost increases are coming for shipping companies using the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has announced an increase in the surcharges applied to transits<\/strong>, which will come into force on 15 July and affect almost all types of vessels.<\/p>\n

The measure concerns the additional charges applied on top of normal transit dues and which, according to the Egyptian authority, have been updated in light of current market conditions. The basic tolls in force since 2024 remain unchanged. The largest increases will affect tankers<\/strong>. For vessels carrying crude oil and petroleum products, the surcharge will rise from 25% to 37%. Significant increases are also expected for gas carriers<\/strong>. LPG carriers will see the surcharge rise from 20% to 32%, while for LNG carriers the increase will be from 7% to 19%. In the dry bulk sector, bulk carriers will move from a 10% surcharge to 22%<\/strong>, more than doubling the additional cost required for transit.<\/p>\n

Container ships, which in recent months have been gradually returning to the Red Sea route<\/strong> after the crisis caused by Houthi attacks, will also be affected by the increase. For this category, the surcharge will be set at 12%, while the differentiated application system already in force for certain types of services will remain unchanged. For general cargo ships, heavy-lift vessels, Ro-Ro units<\/strong> and other categories, the surcharge will rise to 26%. Car carriers will instead pay 26% on northbound transits and 12% on southbound transits. The only category excluded from the increases will be passenger vessels.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The decision comes at a delicate stage for the Suez Canal, which is seeking to recover traffic and revenues after more than a year of sharply reduced transits caused by tensions in the Red Sea. In recent months, some container carriers have begun gradually restoring services through Suez<\/strong>, while in many cases still maintaining alternative rotations via the Cape of Good Hope.
