TRIESTE – The new Maersk container terminal at the Port of Rijeka will become operational in mid-September.
The shipping company has announced the relocation of its AE12 service to the Rijeka Gateway (RGW) terminal. The Far East service, operated jointly with Hapag-Lloyd under the Gemini Alliance, will move from the Adriatic Gateway Container Terminal (AGCT) to the new facility managed by APM Terminals in joint venture with Croatian company Enna Logic (49%).
The project’s first phase, currently underway, involves a €200 million investment for the construction of core infrastructure, acquisition of handling equipment, and establishment of logistics support. A second phase, scheduled over the next ten years, foresees an additional €180 million in investments.
Following the service shift, the official new rotation will be: Port Said East – Koper – Rijeka (RGW) – Port Said East.
“This change is part of the East-West network’s goal to reduce volatility in our customers’ supply chains by offering industry-leading reliability.
The new terminal, a cutting-edge and next-generation facility, features advanced infrastructure and strong inland connectivity designed to seamlessly support your supply chain needs,” Maersk stated in an announcement.
In its first phase, the terminal (featuring a quay with nearly 20 meters of draft) will be able to handle up to 650,000 TEUs per year, with growth expected to surpass one million TEUs in the next phase. Although it will be the most automated terminal in the Adriatic, the investment is expected to generate up to 300 jobs.
