TRIESTE – A difficult afternoon on the A4 motorway between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto, where two separate accidents occurred within a few hours, involving heavy vehicles and causing slowdowns and queues.
The first incident occurred at around 14:50 between the junction with the A57 at Dolo and Padova Est, heading towards Milan. Four heavy vehicles were involved and one truck ended up jack-knifed, blocking two lanes. No injuries were reported. Following the crash, Concessioni Autostradali Venete activated for the first time the new regional protocol for managing motorway disruptions. Variable message signs displayed alternative routes to ease traffic heading towards the accident site.
Traffic police patrols, motorway assistance staff and recovery crews attended the scene to remove the HGV. The incident was cleared at around 13:00 and queues, which had reached 10 kilometres, were gradually cleared.
The second accident occurred later in the afternoon, at around 16:30, on the stretch between the Villesse and Palmanova interchange heading towards Venice, at kilometre 494 near Aiello del Friuli. For reasons still being investigated, an articulated lorry left the carriageway and ended up down the adjacent embankment. One person was injured—the driver, who was conscious when rescuers arrived. The air ambulance, traffic police, fire brigade and staff from Autostrade Alto Adriatico responded. At the time of the crash there were no major traffic issues, but later around three kilometres of slow traffic were reported. Recovery of the vehicle is expected in the evening, at around 21:00, when traffic volumes will be lower.
