TRIESTE – Two separate accidents brought the A4 motorway in the Veneto section to a standstill this morning, with mandatory diversions and major knock-on effects on traffic between San Donà, Cessalto, San Stino and Portogruaro. The first crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. at kilometre marker 437 between San Stino di Livenza and Cessalto heading towards Venice. Three heavy vehicles were involved, including a gas tanker reported to be empty. One person was injured. Autostrade Alto Adriatico immediately activated the automatic mandatory exit towards the A28/A27 for vehicles coming from Trieste, diverting traffic onto the bypass within minutes to prevent further tailbacks. Entry ramps at Portogruaro and San Stino towards Venice were also closed.
The second accident occurred in the stretch between San Donà and Cessalto heading towards Trieste, where two heavy vehicles collided, one of which caught fire. Due to the blaze, it will be necessary to mill part of the carriageway and carry out repaving. For several hours, a mandatory exit at San Donà di Piave remained in place. The stretch between San Donà and Cessalto towards Trieste reopened around 1:00 p.m., but the overtaking lane remains closed to allow repair works. Tailbacks towards Trieste are still reported between Meolo and Cessalto. At 1:40 p.m., the stretch between Portogruaro and San Stino towards Venice was also reopened, after the removal of the articulated lorries involved in the first crash.
