TRIESTE – Fincantieri has teamed up with two Great Lakes shipyards in the U.S. to break into new U.S. shipbuilding programs.
The creation of the “Fourth Coast Shipbuilding Alliance”, an alliance between Fincantieri Marine Group, Fraser Shipyards and Donjon Marine, was announced in Washington with the aim of developing new shipbuilding programs in the Great Lakes area, described as the “Fourth Coast”. The initiative fits into the broader framework of U.S. policies aimed at strengthening domestic shipbuilding.
The first concrete objective is a joint bid for the construction of a new class of vessels for the U.S. Coast Guard: seven Homeland Security Cutter light icebreakers. Fincantieri is positioning itself as the project lead, banking on a production-ready solution and an integrated industrial model. The alliance remains open to other regional companies, particularly in the maritime technology and manufacturing sectors, with the goal of creating a broader and more coordinated industrial ecosystem. The idea is to accelerate lead times and production capacity through cooperation among multiple sites and different skill sets.
Fraser Shipyards underlined that the initiative could support the rapid mobilization of local companies and the adoption of new shipbuilding technologies, also in connection with federal programs aimed at strengthening ties between industry and local communities, such as the Maritime Prosperity Zones proposed by the U.S. administration. Donjon Marine also highlighted the strategic value of the agreement, describing it as a necessary step to expand national industrial capacity and meet growing demand for new vessels.
Fincantieri brings to the table an already established shipyard system in the Great Lakes, active for nearly twenty years and based on an integrated approach across different production sites. This model is being presented as a possible benchmark for developing a broader supply chain and reviving the domestic industrial base.
The Italian group, one of the world’s leading shipbuilders, operates in the United States through Fincantieri Marine Group, which runs three shipyards in Wisconsin and a maintenance facility in Florida. The move further strengthens its position in the North American market at a time of renewed strategic focus on domestic shipbuilding.
