TRIESTE – The PASS4CORE project has entered phase 3. The European initiative focuses on developing safe and secure parking areas for road haulage along Italy’s TEN-T core network corridors. In its second phase, which will close on 31 December and was led by Autostrada del Brennero – A22, the project enabled the development and certification of two safe parking areas for road haulage on the strategic north–south axis connecting Northern and Southern Europe.

Phase 3 of the project provides for the construction of nine safe and secure truck parking areas, developed by ten partners under the new lead partner, Consorzio ZAI – Interporto Quadrante Europa of Verona. The initiative is co-financed 50% by the CEF – Connecting Europe Facility programme, with a total budget of €7.8 million, and will end on 31 December 2027.
Thanks to PASS4CORE, Consorzio ZAI had already been able to build a new 5,500-square-metre safe parking area, inaugurated in March 2023, with 42 bays for HGVs transiting through the interporto area.

The event titled “Parking Areas implementing Safety and Security for (4) CORE network corridors in Italy” brought together yesterday in the Veneto region institutions, operators and partners to take stock of the strategic issue of safety and security in parking areas along TEN-T corridors. PASS4CORE is a key piece of this effort and the event also provided an opportunity to celebrate the results achieved and to officially launch the twin project PASS4CORE-ITA 3. The aim is to ensure adequate, secure truck parking along the motorway, improving road safety, compliance with drivers’ driving and rest times, and the overall efficiency of freight traffic on one of the busiest corridors of the TEN-T network.

Overall, the PASS4CORE Action will help deliver around 1,350 parking spaces for heavy goods vehicles, upgrading more than 300,000 square metres across 13 dedicated areas, which will obtain “Safe and Secure Truck Park” certification in line with European standards.
