TRIESTE – A worker from Impresa Alto Adriatico (former Article 17 company for temporary labour supply) narrowly escaped death on Saturday afternoon at the Port of Monfalcone, after ending up beneath a loader on the Midsea yard.

The dynamics of the accident are still being determined. The incident, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. while the forty-year-old was assisting with the stowage of steel coils, could have had far more serious consequences than the micro-fractures to his legs he ultimately sustained.
It appears the man slipped on the wet ground, preventing the vehicle’s driver from noticing him.
Health authority technicians (ASUGI), Carabinieri and Fire Brigade units responded, along with the emergency vehicle that transported the worker to hospital. He has already been discharged due to the minor nature of the injuries and has returned home.

The local Fit–CGIL office, «following complaints from workers», has urged the companies operating at the Monfalcone port to conduct an inspection to verify working conditions during night-time hours. «Reports indicate the following – pathways are not distinguishable, both because the necessary horizontal signage is missing (cat’s eyes, retroreflective yellow road markings) and because lighting is insufficient to carry out operations safely» the union stated in a note.
