TRIESTE – After Genoa and La Spezia, Venice will also introduce an extra fee for container transport.
Starting June 3, road haulage companies affiliated with Fai, Cna, and Confartigianato will apply a Port fee to the container sector. While the companies refrain from calling it a “tax” — and the exact amount has yet to be defined — they describe it as a necessary contribution to partially offset additional costs caused by inefficiencies beyond the carriers’ control. The Port fee will apply to container terminal services at Porto Marghera.

Fai, Cna and Confartigianato Trasporti Veneto note that the decision aligns with similar measures already adopted in other Italian ports, such as Genoa and La Spezia. “This is not an ideological or confrontational choice,” said Michele Varotto, president of Confartigianato Trasporti Veneto, “but rather a necessary step.”

Transport companies argue they can no longer bear the financial burden of a system that doesn’t work properly on their own. They view the decision not only as a necessary stance, but also as an invitation to institutions and port operators to engage in serious discussions aimed at finding shared solutions.
