TRIESTE – Access to the Port of Trieste was blocked until 5 p.m. today by over 500 demonstrators who had been picketing since the morning at Gate 4, the entrance to Pier VII (container terminal).
Around 2:30 p.m., part of the group marched toward Gate 1 on Riva Traiana (Ro-Ro terminal), blocking access for heavy vehicles and causing a long queue of trucks. The sit-in, organized by the grassroots union USB in support of Pal, began early in the morning and continued until late afternoon. Access to both gates was restored only around 5 p.m., after the road leading to the port had been temporarily closed and heavy vehicles headed to the terminal were diverted by the police, carabinieri, and local law enforcement officers on site.

A group of protesters from the Gate 4 sit-in also moved, around 1:50 p.m., toward the ramp leading to the Trieste Ring Road, blocking traffic coming from Viale Campi Elisi, where normal circulation resumed around 2:30 p.m.
The demonstrators who had been picketing at the port entrances then moved toward the city center, marching in a procession, where earlier in the day another rally organized by the CGIL union had taken place, drawing around 5,000 participants and causing significant traffic disruptions, worsened by a simultaneous public transport strike.
