TRIESTE – The first dual-mode firefighting vehicle intended for operations in the railway tunnels on the Koper–Divača line has arrived.
The vehicle was delivered to 2TDK by the supplier WEBO Maribor and will be assigned to the Gasilska brigada Koper (Koper Fire Brigade), with which 2TDK has an agreement for fire safety along the railway route.
It is a special vehicle capable of operating both on the road and on rails. It is primarily designed to work in railway tunnels, but it can also be used on open sections of the line where access by road vehicles is not possible. The dual-mode system includes an integrated rail bogie, with dedicated traction and braking for running on the tracks. In the event of an incident, the vehicle reaches designated points in front of the tunnels by road, where platforms are available for placing it onto the rails.
The equipment is designed to operate in enclosed and complex environments. The vehicle carries up to six firefighters and is equipped with a compressed-air system that supplies both the engine and the breathing masks. On board there is a 2,500-litre water tank, a 250-litre foam tank, an electric generator and a roof-mounted water monitor.
On the road the maximum speed is 90 km/h. In rail mode the vehicle can travel at 20 km/h, rising to 40 km/h by activating the air bank, intended for a possible rapid evacuation from the tunnel. In addition to rail operations, the vehicle can also be used for interventions in road tunnels.
The purchase is part of a procedure launched in 2023, when 2TDK issued a tender for two dual-mode rescue vehicles for the railway tunnels. The contract with the supplier was signed in December of the same year and provides for the delivery of two vehicles.
