TRIESTE – A protest in support of the people of Gaza took place today at Porto Marghera, where about ten boats approached alongside the Melani III, a containership berthed at the TIV terminal.

The vessel, an MSC unit sailing under the Liberian flag, operates regular services between the ports of Trieste, Ravenna and Venice, connecting them with Haifa and Ashdod in Israel. According to the protest organizers, the ship was carrying weapons destined for Israel or equipment bound for a settlement in the West Bank. For the same vessel and its trade with Israel, a blockade had been staged in recent days at Trieste port, at Gate IV, lasting a few hours.
Today’s action in Marghera had been announced in the morning by social centers from Northeast Italy against the departure of the Melani III. The boats were monitored by law enforcement during the protest. Shortly before 7 p.m., the containership – which had entered port late (around 11 p.m. yesterday) to avoid demonstrations – departed as scheduled for the port of Ashdod after completing cargo operations.
