VENEZIA – An urgent medical rescue operation was coordinated this afternoon by the Venice Coast Guard to assist a seafarer taken ill while at sea.

The alarm was raised at 16:45, when the captain of a fishing vessel from the Chioggia fleet, sailing about 18 nautical miles off the Venetian coastline, reported a sudden deterioration in the health of a crew member, with chest pain and breathing difficulties. The request for assistance reached the operations room of the Chioggia Harbour Master’s Office, which immediately contacted the International Radio Medical Centre for an initial remote medical assessment.

Coordination of the operation was then transferred to the Venice Coast Guard, which ordered the immediate dispatch of patrol boat CP 833. The unit reached the fishing vessel in around 30 minutes and carried out the transfer of the seafarer, a 54-year-old man, on board the rescue craft.
The patient was transported to the meeting point inside the lagoon, near the Lido of Venice, where he was handed over to the 118 water ambulance. He was then transferred to hospital for the necessary treatment.
