TRIESTE – Fincantieri, Albanian company KAYO, controlled by the Ministry of Defence, and the “Pavarësia” Vocational Institute in Vlora have signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Pashaliman shipyard to launch training programmes dedicated to shipbuilding and naval construction.
The ceremony took place in the presence of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Defence Minister Ermal Nufi and Fincantieri chief executive officer Pierroberto Folgiero. During the event, the name of the joint venture established by Fincantieri and KAYO, Fincantieri Albania, was also presented. The company will lead the project to relaunch and modernise the Pashaliman shipyard.
The agreement provides for training modules, internships and educational activities for students of the vocational institute, with the aim of creating the skills needed for the development of the new industrial hub. Fincantieri will contribute its know-how to the definition of the teaching programmes and to teacher training.
The programme will involve students from courses in mechanics, electrical engineering, thermo-hydraulics, information technology and transport vehicle services, with activities dedicated to naval steelwork, plant engineering, outfitting, HVAC systems, painting and maintenance of naval units.
The initiative is part of the industrial project through which Fincantieri and KAYO intend to transform Pashaliman into a hub specialised in the construction and maintenance of naval vessels, with particular attention to Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), serving both the Albanian Navy and international markets.
«Training is the starting point for any sustainable, long-term industrial project», said Fincantieri chief executive officer Pierroberto Folgiero. «Through this agreement, we intend to contribute to the development of new skills in Albanian shipbuilding, making available the know-how and experience acquired by Fincantieri. Investing in people means creating the conditions to generate lasting value, strengthen the competitiveness of the Mediterranean maritime system and support the development of a modern and integrated industrial ecosystem».
