TRIESTE – Venice Port Community, the consortium bringing together operators at the Veneto port, is ready to take action on critical issues concerning the coexistence of commercial traffic and the protection of the Lagoon.

At the invitation of the City of Venice, VPC took part in the General Assembly held yesterday on the topic of wave motion and the preservation of the Lagoon.
“This is a complex and delicate issue that must be handled with great care, because safeguarding Venice is essential for all the city’s economic activities. Speed control systems are a highly relevant topic, and as VPC, we are grateful to the City for involving us, given the specific expertise we can bring to the table,” said VPC President Davide Calderan.

“There are three key areas we intend to focus on. Support for speed control in the Giudecca Canal and other Lagoon channels, aiming to improve navigation safety and reduce the impact of wave motion on the city’s infrastructure and natural heritage. From a conservation perspective, it is necessary to reconsider the current MOSE activation threshold of 110 centimeters rather than 85 centimeters. This – Calderan added – would allow for a better balance in the operations of the regulated port, with positive effects for both the city and the port’s economic community. Finally, there is the issue of maintenance and upkeep of the lagoon’s canals, including the Vittorio Emanuele canal. Dredging and cleaning efforts would ensure a regular flow of water and more efficient navigation.”

In a statement, the VPC president also recalled how port operators have always shown a strong commitment to environmental protection and to promoting sustainable solutions for the city and its port.
“The May 6 meeting was an important opportunity to strengthen cooperation with the City and other relevant authorities, in the interest of a safer, more sustainable, and more prosperous future for Venice,” Calderan concluded.
