TRIESTE – The Port of Trieste is back at the centre of dialogue between Italy and Hungary. In Rome, the two Deputy Ministers confirmed political and financial support for the development of the Hungarian terminal. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and reiterated the close cooperation between the two countries in logistics, connectivity and infrastructure investment. At the heart of the talks was Hungary’s investment in the Port of Trieste, in particular in the area of the former Aquilinia refinery site, adjacent to the Navigable Canal, regarded as a strategic hub between the Mediterranean, Central-Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

The value of Adria Port’s commitment and the Italian Government’s support for the ongoing works were confirmed. Quay wall construction and dredging works, funded with around €45 million through the National Complementary Plan, are progressing as scheduled and are expected to be completed by August 2026. The process to allocate a further €10 million to complete dredging works is also at an advanced stage. These resources are seen as necessary to enable the berthing of large vessels and the full development of the Ro-Ro terminal.

The talks also highlighted the broader dimension of cooperation along the Adriatic–Central-Eastern Europe axis. Attention focused on integrated logistics corridors and links with Ukraine, within a framework aimed at strengthening supply-chain resilience and supporting reconstruction efforts. The summit confirmed political convergence on turning bilateral cooperation into operational results, with Trieste identified as a strategic gateway for flows towards Europe’s industrial core.
