TRIESTE – A 27-year-old worker died this morning at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone plant after falling around 20 metres while working on the roof of an industrial building.

The accident occurred shortly after the start of the shift inside Fincantieri’s production site in Monfalcone. The victim, Tommaso Andreuzza, worked for Trieste-based Inquota, a company specialising in working at height. According to initial reconstructions, he was carrying out maintenance on the roof of a welding shop, which had been damaged in recent months by a violent hailstorm.

The fall, from an estimated height of about 20 metres, left him no chance. Paramedics attempted resuscitation for a long time, but the young man died from the severe injuries sustained. The area was immediately cordoned off and made safe.

Carabinieri officers, the fire brigade and inspectors from the local health authority attended the scene. The Gorizia public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances and verify compliance with safety regulations. Checks are ongoing.

Andreuzza, described by colleagues as highly experienced in his field, was working as site foreman on behalf of the external contractor. Inquota operates on industrial roofs, façades and other high structures, using ropes and specialist equipment for high-risk work.

In an official statement, Fincantieri expressed condolences over the worker’s death and sympathy for the family. The company said rescue services and the required procedures were activated immediately, and it pledged full cooperation with the authorities.

Condolences also came from the regional government. The President of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Massimiliano Fedriga, and the Regional Councillor for Labour, Alessia Rosolen, described it as a «terrible and unacceptable» loss, stressing the need to strengthen safety culture in workplaces.

Metalworkers’ unions reacted strongly. Fim, Fiom and Uilm called a two-hour strike during an assembly in Monfalcone and at the group’s other yards, extending the initiative to subcontracted companies as well. «No more dying on the job». the joint statement reads, calling for thorough checks on operating conditions and safety training.

The Monfalcone shipyard is one of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s main industrial hubs and employs thousands of workers directly and across the supply chain. Investigations will have to establish whether this was an unavoidable accident or whether there were shortcomings in protective equipment or procedures.
