TRIESTE – Two people were killed in a serious crash that occurred today at around 3:30 p.m. on the A4 motorway between San Stino di Livenza and Portogruaro, heading towards Trieste. Both victims were travelling in the vehicle that violently rear-ended the articulated lorry ahead of them in the driving lane.
Traffic police, firefighters and recovery vehicles are on site to remove the vehicles. The motorway section where the crash occurred remained closed until 6:15 p.m., with a mandatory exit at San Stino di Livenza for traffic coming from Venice. Traffic is now returning to normal and no queues are currently reported on the A4.
Traffic had already been severely disrupted this morning on the A4 towards Venice, in the stretch between Sommacampagna and Verona Sud, due to two separate accidents. Traffic resumed around midday after hours of slowdowns. Two people were injured, both extricated from their vehicles by firefighters. The first collision occurred shortly after 9 a.m. at kilometre marker 281, near the Verona Sud exit towards Venice. Two heavy vehicles were involved in a rear-end collision. Two teams with seven firefighters and a mobile crane responded from the Verona command. One of the drivers was trapped in the cab and was freed after an operation lasting about an hour.
While rescue operations were under way, reports came in of a second crash a few kilometres earlier, near the Sommacampagna junction. In this case, a lorry and a van collided. The van driver was also trapped and was extricated by rescuers, with the crane moved from the first scene.
Both injured people were handed over to Suem 118 medical staff. Firefighters then secured the vehicles and the carriageway, allowing the motorway to reopen around 12 p.m. Traffic police and road assistance personnel were also on site. Long queues were reported throughout the morning, with knock-on effects on the ordinary road network.
