TRIESTE – The port of Rijeka has opened up to rail traffic for finished vehicles, with the arrival of the first car train at the general cargo terminal, marking a new development for the Croatian port’s automotive logistics business.
The train, arriving from Trnava, Slovakia, marks the first delivery of this kind by rail to the General Cargo Terminal of Luka Rijeka. According to the operators involved, the convoy consisted of wagons dedicated to vehicle transport and carried around 190 cars.
This is a significant step for the port, which is thus expanding its operational reach in the automotive logistics segment, strengthening links with Central Europe. The initiative is part of a broader strategy for the development of rail-sea intermodality along the Adriatic-Danube axis.
The project involved several logistics operators, including Emil Frey Logistics, and represents an initial operational test ahead of higher volumes. According to the indications released, traffic could reach around 60,000 vehicles moved by rail over the course of the year.
