TRIESTE – Mein Schiff 4 arrived today in the port of Trieste after crossing the Strait of Hormuz following a complex operational situation linked to instability in the Gulf area.
The TUI Cruises ship reached the Maritime Station without passengers, with only the crew on board, after a forced stop lasting almost two months in the Middle Eastern strait, one of the world’s main maritime corridors. The transit took place during a brief time window in which passage had been declared safe.
The ship was guided through Hormuz by captain Panagiotis Varotsos. The episode brings renewed attention to the consequences that geopolitical tensions can have on the cruise sector and, more generally, on international maritime traffic.
The ship was welcomed in port by a welcome banner prepared by Trieste Terminal Passeggeri. An institutional moment also took place on board with the captain and local authorities, including the mayor of Trieste.
Before leaving Trieste, Mein Schiff 4 embarked around 1,600 passengers.
Also present today at the Maritime Station is Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur, with around 700 passengers disembarking and the same number embarking.
