TRIESTE – The company 2TDK has submitted its application to obtain the integrated construction permit for the new parallel track on the Koper-Divača railway line.

This is a key step towards the launch of a project designed to double the capacity of the main rail link between the Slovenian port and its hinterland.
According to 2TDK chief executive Matej Oset, the new project will ensure greater capacity, reliability and long-term efficiency along one of the country’s most important transport corridors. The authorisation procedure will be handled by the competent ministry and includes both the issue of the construction permit and the environmental impact assessment, essential requirements for the start of construction works.

The new track will run parallel to the one already built as part of the new railway line project. The works include the construction of new infrastructure, including the Gabrovica and Vinjan viaducts and the Glinščica bridge, which will be built alongside the existing structures.
The project also includes three new tunnels: the 80-metre T1A tunnel, the 3.2-kilometre T3-6L tunnel and the roughly one-kilometre T7L tunnel. The longest tunnels along the route have already been built during the construction of the so-called “right track” and are currently being used as service tunnels pending the installation of the parallel track.

A two-stage tender is expected to be published by the end of the year to select the contractor that will carry out the works. Construction is scheduled to start next year, subject to the final permit being obtained, while completion of the entire project is expected in 2030.
«We are preparing the project carefully, taking into account technical, territorial and environmental requirements, to ensure responsible and professional implementation also in the next phases», Oset said.
The project is considered strategic to support traffic growth at the port of Koper, Slovenia’s main seaport, by improving the fluidity of rail connections towards Central European markets.
