TRIESTE – In 2024, Italian container terminals closed the year with a 3.4% increase in throughput and an 8.1% rise in revenue, marking a recovery after the slowdown of 2023.
The analysis comes from the Fedespedi Research Centre, which in the ninth edition of its report examines the performance of 19 companies managing Italy’s main container terminals. Overall, the terminals under review handled 10.435 million teu, equal to 89.9% of the national total.
The figures show a broad improvement. While 2023 ended with a 1.6% decline, 2024 records a widespread rebound, driven partly by several facilities achieving double-digit growth. The highest results were in Naples, with Società Terminal Container (+32.8%) and Terminal Flavio Gioia (+21.7%). Strong performances also came from Genoa’s Sech (+18.2%) and the Venice Intermodal Terminal (+16.3%). Among the largest terminals, both La Spezia and Gioia Tauro posted +11%.
Psa Genova Pra’ remained stable (+0.1%) but confirmed its position as Italy’s leading gateway port with 1,398,837 teu handled, while Gioia Tauro’s Medcenter topped the national transhipment ranking with 3,940,447 teu.
On the economic and financial side, total revenues for the companies analysed rose from €981.2 million to €1,060.3 million. The strongest growth was recorded at the Sech terminal in Genoa (+26%), Vado Gateway (+21%) and Gioia Tauro’s Medcenter (+16.1%). The final aggregated result also rebounded sharply, reaching €111.6 million, up 42.4% on 2023.
In 2024, the total workforce of the 19 terminal operators reached 4,789 employees. The sector thus strengthens its relevance within the Italian port system, supported by more stable demand and increased attention from shipping lines to containerised infrastructure.
