TRIESTE – Heavy goods vehicle and commercial traffic has resumed on the motorway network after the two-day driving ban in place on Sunday and Monday for the Italian Republic Day holiday. For today, Tuesday 3 June, motorway operator Autostrade Alto Adriatico has issued a “red alert” due to particularly heavy traffic since early morning, especially caused by the arrival of commercial vehicles from Central and Eastern Europe resuming travel after the two-day halt.
However, two incidents have further complicated the situation. The first occurred around 5:00 a.m., when a heavy vehicle caught fire on the westbound carriageway (towards Venice) of the A4 motorway. The articulated lorry ignited just after the San Stino exit. In order to allow emergency services to respond and extinguish the flames, the stretch between Portogruaro and San Stino was closed, with a mandatory exit at Portogruaro and traffic redirected via the A28/A27 bypass for those coming from Trieste. Operations concluded around 8:00 a.m., although the San Stino exit remains closed to allow removal of the vehicle.
The second incident occurred around 7:30 a.m., involving another fire, this time affecting a van travelling on the A34 motorway (Villesse–Gorizia), between Gradisca and Villesse in the direction of Villesse, resulting in queues for drivers coming from Gorizia.
In both cases, there were no injuries: the drivers managed to exit their vehicles before the fires broke out.
By 9:00 a.m., intermittent traffic congestion was reported on several stretches: on the A4 between San Giorgio di Nogaro and San Stino di Livenza and between Villesse and Palmanova, both towards Venice; on the A34 between Gradisca and Villesse towards Villesse; on the A28 between the Cordignano toll barrier and the A28/A27 junction, due to traffic being rerouted; and on the Mestre ring road (A57) between Terraglio and the A57/A27 junction heading towards Trieste.
