TRIESTE – Another accident involving heavy goods vehicles has occurred on the A4 motorway, where a three-truck rear-end collision forced the closure of the section between Portogruaro and Cessalto towards Venice.

The latest accident involving heavy goods vehicles has once again raised concerns about safety on the A4 motorway. At around 8:30 a.m. today, Tuesday 14 July, three trucks were involved in a rear-end collision on the stretch between San Stino di Livenza and Cessalto, heading towards Venice.

One of the drivers became trapped inside the cab of his vehicle. Firefighters extricated him, and he remained conscious throughout the rescue operation. Emergency medical services, the Traffic Police and Autostrade Alto Adriatico personnel also attended the scene. To allow rescue operations and secure the area, the motorway section between Portogruaro and Cessalto towards Venice was closed. Vehicles travelling from Trieste and Udine were required to exit at the Portogruaro toll station. The San Stino di Livenza interchange towards Venice and the A28/A4 junction in the same direction were also closed.

The closure caused major traffic disruption along one of the main freight corridors linking north-eastern Italy with the rest of the country. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Traffic Police.

The incident is the latest in a series of crashes that have affected the Veneto–Friuli Venezia Giulia section of the A4 in recent months, a motorway used daily by a high volume of heavy goods vehicles travelling to the Northern Adriatic ports and international border crossings, with inevitable consequences for traffic flow and the logistics supply chain.

The section between Portogruaro and Cessalto towards Venice reopened at around 11:15 a.m. today after being closed following the collision involving three heavy goods vehicles, including a car transporter. One person was injured but remained conscious. The San Stino di Livenza interchange towards Venice and the A28/A4 junction in the same direction have also reopened.

Traffic queues are currently reported in several sections between Latisana and San Stino di Livenza towards Venice.
