TRIESTE – In mid-February, Consorzio Stabile Eteria, the general contractor for the project, delivered the executive design for the new San Stino di Livenza interchange and toll plaza. The verification phase required under Italy’s public procurement code has now begun, while the first draft of the executive design for the motorway widening is also expected by early summer.
The timetable is moving quickly: the tender was launched in November 2024, the contract was awarded in August 2025, and the design for the new toll plaza was delivered in the first half of 2026. The aim is to approve the executive design in early 2027, taking advantage of the simplified procedures provided for under the Milleproroghe decree, and to begin works immediately afterwards.
The update was presented during a meeting in San Donà di Piave attended by representatives of the Veneto Region, motorway concessionaire Autostrade Alto Adriatico and local mayors. Since the contract was signed, numerous technical activities preparatory to the executive design have been launched: topographic surveys using drones and laser scanners, geognostic and chemical investigations, archaeological checks and assessments of wartime ordnance risk, as well as works to manage interference with existing networks such as gas, electricity, water and telecommunications.
The work involves a wide range of bodies, including heritage authorities, municipalities, the Veneto Region, Arpav, the land reclamation consortium, the river basin authority and RFI. The project covers a stretch of about 26 kilometres and entails a major transformation of the infrastructure. In addition to the new San Stino toll plaza, equipped with three entry lanes and five exit lanes, plans include three overpasses, 12 underpasses for roads and railway lines, nine bridges over waterways and about 50 hydraulic structures. The works will be carried out while keeping traffic flowing at all times with two lanes in each direction, a factor that increases the technical and organisational complexity of the construction sites. Other works along the motorway corridor are also continuing in parallel. The widening of the San Donà toll plaza to eleven lanes and the refurbishment of the traffic police barracks have been completed. The new Fratta Nord and Sud parking areas for heavy vehicles, with a total of 161 spaces, are undergoing final testing, while works are progressing at the Portogruaro toll barrier with three new lanes.
