TRIESTE – New rail closures in Croatia are complicating the scheduling of freight trains to and from the Port of Rijeka, with direct impacts on services towards Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia.
According to Croatia’s rail infrastructure manager HŽ, continuous closures are planned on sections of line between several stations on the national network. The disruptions will affect rail links between Rijeka (Croatia) and Budapest (Hungary), Dunajská Streda (Slovakia) and Inđija (Serbia)—strategic routes for forwarding cargo towards Central Europe and the Balkans.
Where possible, rail operators are announcing diversions via alternative routes, subject to available network capacity. However, existing infrastructure constraints may reduce operational flexibility and extend transit times. In addition to continuous closures, daily interruptions are also planned on several sections of the Croatian rail network. These temporary suspensions will further affect the planning of services to and from the Port of Rijeka, requiring constant reallocation of rail slots and close coordination between rail operators and the port terminal.
