TRIESTE – On the new railway line between Koper and Divača, 13,656 metres of track have been laid — meaning that half of the 27.1-kilometre route is now equipped with the infrastructure needed for its use.
Track installation is currently underway in two sections: in the line’s longest tunnel, the Lokev tunnel (T1), and in the Tinjan tunnel (T4). Track has already been laid in the Škofije (T8), Mlinarji (T7), Osp (T5–6) and Stepani (T3) tunnels, as well as on the Gabrovica and Vinjan viaducts. A rigid-base track system is used inside tunnels and on viaducts, while a small section of open line uses traditional ballast track.
In the coming months, works will focus mainly on completing track-laying on the remaining sections and installing technical systems, including line electrification, tunnel power-supply equipment (transformer-station systems and power cables), signalling, safety and telecommunications devices, an emergency-lighting system inside tunnels, a safety and video-surveillance system, and remote-control equipment. Progress in track laying could allow the entire line to be open to rail traffic by March 2026.
