MONFALCONE – In the coming months, berths 1 and 2 of the quay at the Port of Monfalcone will host cruise ships alongside a pontoon.Mayor Anna Maria Cisint explained this to the media at the end of a meeting between the Municipality of Monfalcone, general secretary of the Port Authority (Vittorio Torbianelli), director of the Port (Sergio Signore) and the trade union representatives of CGIL, CISL and UIL. With the illustrated project, they are trying to solve the problem – raised by the trade unions in recent months – of freeing cruise ships from the use of the commercial quay..
«Today the Trieste Network Authority has confirmed that in all probability in the short term the landing places closest to the Fincantieri company, 1 and 2, will be able to host the arriving cruise ships, after all the necessary checks, with the use of a pontoon in the sea», said Mayor Cisint.
During the meeting, moreover, they have been specified also the destinations of the 60 million euros for the port that, with defined cronoprograms, will be distributed in the different essential works to realize for widening its use. Among these, the electrification and the asphalting of the quay, as well as the intervention for the lighting, which will start within the year.
These are fundamental works for the economy linked to the sea, explains a note from the Municipality, because about three hundred people are employed in this area and the goal remains to increase the jobs linked to the port.
In recent days, the Portorosega quay hosted five ships at the same time, reflecting the desire to recover after the difficulties linked to the Covid 19 pandemic. In the latest statistical report of the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, the port of call was growing in the first half of 2021 (+2.98%), with 1.62 million tons of goods handled. An increase driven by dry bulk (+12.09%) but with a negative balance for various goods (-15.53%), mainly due to the prolonged difficulties encountered in the cellulose sector.
