TRIESTE – The MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company group is passing to the second generation of the Aponte family, with the transfer of ownership to the founder’s children.
The change in ownership within MSC was completed in the final quarter of 2025, when founder Gianluigi Aponte transferred the shares to his children Diego Aponte and Alexa Aponte. Both Italian citizens and resident in Switzerland, they have already been involved in the group’s operational management for years.
Diego serves as group president, while Alexa is Chief Financial Officer. The ownership transfer formalizes an already established governance structure and is intended to ensure strategic continuity at a time of strong expansion for the company, MSC explains. According to the company, the transition represents an important milestone in the history of the Geneva-based business, founded in 1970 and now one of the world’s leading container shipping operators.
MSC will continue to focus on its core business, the maritime transport of goods, with Captain Gianluigi Aponte retaining the role of Executive Chairman of the Group.
«I am extremely proud of this important moment. Transferring ownership to my children is not only recognition of their dedication and achievements, but also the continuation of our family’s centuries-old maritime tradition. With Diego and Alexa at the helm, I am confident that our Group – said Gianluigi Aponte, founder of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company and Executive Chairman – will continue to prosper and honour our legacy of innovation, resilience and constant commitment to the sea».
