TRIESTE – A historic record at the Port of Koper’s container terminal: with 1.27 million TEU handled in 2025, it remains firmly in the lead among Northern Adriatic ports.
In detail, growth stood at 12%, reaching 1,272,161 TEU. The increase in volumes, Luka Koper, the port’s operating company says, was driven above all by new traffic linked to the outfitting and supply of production plants in hinterland markets, as well as by the reorganisation of maritime services from the Far East and within the Mediterranean.
Overall traffic, at 23,003,522 tonnes, was broadly in line with 2024. Over the year, a total of 1,751 ships called, slightly fewer than in 2024. The number of trains handled (20,886), rail wagons (270,516) and trucks (490,819) increased. Despite limitations caused by the upgrading works on the rail network, the share of rail traffic once again exceeded road, reaching 51% of the total.
At the car and Ro-Ro terminal, with 914,817 equivalent units handled, the 2023 record was nearly matched, though not surpassed. The 3% growth compared with 2024 was mainly supported by imports of vehicles from China for several manufacturers; car export volumes to Mediterranean countries also increased. In the general cargo segment, volumes fell (-11%), mainly due to a decline in timber, rubber, and iron and steel products. Demand for project cargo continues to grow. Dry and liquid bulk traffic also declined (-10%), primarily due to lower iron ore volumes.
Based on preliminary figures not yet subject to review, Luka Koper posted net sales revenues of €376.5 million in 2025, up 15% on 2024. Revenue growth was mainly driven by higher container and car volumes, as well as increased income from storage activities. Last year, the maritime and logistics sector was still heavily affected by the restrictions on navigation in the Red Sea and through the Suez Canal. Shipowners and logistics operators therefore focused, Luka Koper adds, primarily on managing the critical issues linked to the geopolitical context and changes in trade routes.
