TRIESTE – Traffic at the port of Venice increased by 1.7% in the first quarter of 2026, supported mainly by dry bulk and containerised goods, while Chioggia closed with a slight decline.
In detail, the Venetian port recorded significant growth in dry bulk (+7.2% compared with the same period in 2025). The segment was driven above all by cement and minerals, up 14.7%, partly as a result of construction sites linked to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Animal feed (+6.5%) and metallurgical products (+1.2%) also increased, while coal traffic has now fallen to zero, in line with the new energy strategies. The cereals segment remained stable.
The performance of general cargo was also positive, recording +5.3%. The result was supported in particular by container traffic, up both in terms of tonnes (+163,636) and TEUs (+5.7%). Full containers also recorded good growth, at +5.7%, while ro-ro traffic remained substantially unchanged.
On the passenger front, the quarter marked a positive start to the 2026 cruise season, with 10,997 passengers handled in Venice and the first ship call also recorded in Chioggia.
For the port of Chioggia, the overall picture shows a 2.7% decrease in total volumes. However, the cargo segment showed positive dynamics in general cargo, up 62.9%, driven in particular by steel products.
