TRIESTE – Fincantieri is expanding its presence in the Canadian defence market through its subsidiary WASS Submarine Systems: a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Magellan Aerospace to explore opportunities for industrial cooperation in the underwater defence sector.

The agreement was signed during CANSEC 2026, Canada’s leading defence exhibition, and aims to support the development of national capabilities in the underwater sector, while also strengthening the involvement of local industry.

The cooperation will focus in particular on heavyweight torpedoes and countermeasure systems. The two companies will assess possible joint activities in the production of components and subassemblies, in the energy sections of the systems, final assembly, factory testing, and maintenance and support activities throughout the full product life cycle.
For WASS, a Fincantieri group company specialising in the design and development of advanced underwater defence systems, the agreement represents an opportunity to make more than 150 years of experience in the sector available to the Canadian market.

The objective is to create a sustainable and competitive industrial supply chain in Canada over the long term, combining WASS’s technological expertise with Magellan Aerospace’s industrial and manufacturing presence in Canada. The agreement is part of Canada’s broader effort to strengthen its underwater defence capabilities and could provide the basis for future industrial and technological cooperation between the two companies.
