TRIESTE – Fincantieri has secured one of its most significant results in recent years in the underwater defence sector, thanks to a major order won by its subsidiary WASS.
WASS Submarine Systems has been awarded by the Indian Navy the supply of Black Shark Advanced heavyweight torpedoes for the six Scorpène-class submarines in service with the Indian fleet. The overall value of the contract exceeds €200 million and it is the largest ever in the company’s history, in the very year of its 150th anniversary.
Deliveries are expected between 2028 and 2030. Production will be concentrated at WASS’s plant in Livorno, considered a national centre of excellence for underwater systems and one of the group’s industrial pillars. The Black Shark Advanced is already in service with the Italian Navy and with six other navies worldwide. The system is appreciated for its operational performance, reliability and life-cycle costs, factors that have helped strengthen its positioning on the international market.
The order also includes submarine launch systems, maintenance equipment and spare parts, ensuring full support to the Indian Navy. The deal strengthens WASS’s presence in India and fits into Fincantieri’s strategy to develop further industrial and commercial opportunities in the country.
«This agreement represents a key strategic step for Fincantieri in India, a market of central importance in our long-term international growth strategy and one of the most dynamic naval hubs globally. Strengthening our presence in India – commented Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Fincantieri – means building lasting industrial and institutional partnerships in a region that is playing an increasingly central role in global maritime security. We are proud to deepen our cooperation with the Indian Navy and to position Fincantieri as a reliable, long-term partner in this strategic geography».
