TRIESTE – Two new quay cranes bound for the Adriatic Gate Container Terminal at the port of Rijeka (Croatia) were loaded in recent days onto the vessel Zhen Hua 25 in Shanghai.
The two fully assembled STS (Ship-to-Shore) units will reach Rijeka by circumnavigating Africa — a voyage of around 11,000 nautical miles expected to take 35 to 40 days. Their arrival is scheduled for mid-November.
Once at the Brajdica terminal, they will be unloaded, installed and tested, with the goal of being fully operational by the end of the year.
The cranes were built by ZPMC, a world leader in container handling equipment manufacturing. They are two latest-generation Super Post Panamax units, which will enable AGCT to handle the largest container vessels currently in operation.
The new quay cranes are just the first step in the terminal’s equipment upgrade: two new yard cranes (RTGs) are also due for delivery by October. These will be hybrid Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes, offering significant fuel savings and a consequent reduction in emissions.
In July, AGCT welcomed the largest vessel ever to call at the Croatian port — the CMA CGM Adonis, with a capacity of over 15,500 TEUs, deployed on the Asia–Mediterranean MED5 service operated by the OCEAN Alliance (CMA CGM, OOCL, COSCO Shipping Lines and Evergreen Line).
