TRIESTE – Traffic is on the rise at the port of Ravenna: in the January–October 2025 period it handled a total of 22,913,982 tonnes, up 8.0% (almost 1.7 million tonnes more) compared with the same period in 2024. The number of ship calls totalled 2,204, up 2.8% (62 more calls) compared with 2024.
Containers up, trailers and rolling cargo down
Containers, with 176,682 TEU, increased by 5.3% compared with 2024.
The overall 10-month 2025 result for trailers and rolling cargo was down: -14.0% in units handled (68,890 units, 11,170 fewer than in 2024) and -6.1% in terms of cargo handled (1,413,890 tonnes). For trailers on the Ravenna–Brindisi–Catania service, in the first 10 months of 2025, units handled totalled 57,747, down 1.9% compared with 2024.
Dry cargo grows
Looking at data from the Port System Authority of the Central-Northern Adriatic Sea, in the first 10 months of 2025 dry cargo (solid bulk, general and unitised cargo), with 17,909,183 tonnes handled, increased by 3.9% (680,000 tonnes more) compared with the same period in 2024. Liquid bulk, with 5,004,799 tonnes handled in the first 10 months of 2025, rose by 25.4% compared with the same period in 2024. The agri-food sector (foodstuffs and agricultural products), with 4,810,264 tonnes, recorded growth of 14.4% (605,000 tonnes more) in January–October 2025 compared with the same period in 2024.
By commodity, grain performed very well, with 1,837,160 tonnes, up 47.5% (591,000 tonnes more) compared with 2024. Flour also increased, at 1,078,367 tonnes (+4.1%), while oilseeds imports were down, with 793,403 tonnes (-14.4%). Finally, animal and vegetable oils, with 681,495 tonnes handled, rose by 21.5% compared with the same period in 2024.
Construction materials also up
In the first 10 months of 2025, construction materials recorded total handling of 3,875,498 tonnes, up 7.4% compared with the same period in 2024 (266,000 tonnes more), driven above all by raw materials for ceramic production in the Sassuolo district, with 3,446,162 tonnes handled (+6.2%, or 200,000 tonnes more).
Metallurgical products down, petroleum products up
For metallurgical products, 5,030,657 tonnes were handled, down 0.5% compared with the same period in 2024 (27,000 tonnes less).
As for petroleum products, 3,435,999 tonnes were handled, more than 1 million tonnes more than in the same period of 2024 (+42.9%), mainly thanks to 13 vessels bound for the regasification terminal carrying 900,000 tonnes of LNG. Chemical products, on the other hand, were negative (-17.2%), with 729,797 tonnes.
Fertilisers were also down in the first 10 months of 2025, at 1,349,776 tonnes (-4.0% compared with 2024, or 56,000 tonnes less).
Fewer cruise calls
In the January–October 2025 period, Ravenna’s cruise terminal recorded 75 calls (against 79 in the same period of 2024), for a total of 241,412 passengers (-11.1%), of whom 205,215 were “home port” passengers. The forecast for next year, however, is for a reversal of the trend.
The November–December trend
Based on initial data for November 2025, total throughput is estimated at almost 2.5 million tonnes, up 14.5% compared with the same month last year.
Positive signs are expected for almost all cargo categories, but with a decline for liquid chemicals and metallurgical products. Container traffic is growing, while trailers are still down.
