TRIESTE – Venice is set to establish the “Sea Hub”, a new project dedicated to training and research on maritime issues, promoted by the Italian Navy, Ca’ Foscari University, Iuav University and Cnr-Ismar.

The agreement was signed yesterday at the Venice Arsenale. The initiative aims to create a centre of excellence dedicated to the study of the sea and to the training of specialists in the scientific, economic and geopolitical fields linked to the maritime dimension. The project was conceived to bring together the different areas of expertise already present in the city. The Italian Navy provides advanced training for officers at the Institute of Maritime Military Studies in Venice. Ca’ Foscari and Iuav universities offer first-, second- and third-level academic programmes, while Cnr-Ismar is engaged in advanced scientific research on the marine environment.

The aim is to strengthen existing collaborations and develop integrated training and research paths. The sea is regarded as a central element from a geopolitical, geoeconomic and environmental perspective, with direct implications for the country’s economic development and security. The activities of the Sea Hub will cover a very broad field: from critical infrastructure above and below the sea surface to the blue economy, from environmental protection to the sustainable exploitation of marine resources, and up to the geopolitical and strategic dynamics linked to maritime spaces.
The initiative forms part of the broader urban development project “Venice campus city”, which aims to strengthen the city’s role as a university and research hub.
