TRIESTE – The US Congress recognises the port of Trieste as a leading logistics hub.
Friuli Venezia Giulia governor Massimiliano Fedriga met in Washington with several representatives of the US Congress, including Mike Rulli (representative of the Italian-American Congressional Delegation), Joe Wilson (chairman of the House Helsinki Commission) and Jimmy Panetta (vice-chairman of the Italian-American Congressional Delegation). The talks focused on the strategic role of the port of Trieste as a central node for maritime connections between central-eastern Europe and the rest of the world.
«During these talks we reiterated our intention to build new relations with individual American States, starting specific discussions for the signing of new Memoranda of Understanding aimed at encouraging mutual investment», Fedriga said. Also present were regional councillor for Productive Activities Sergio Emidio Bini and the governor’s spokesman Edoardo Petiziol.
The American interlocutors recognised the port of Trieste as a leading logistics hub. «Having the Trieste port, together with the network of connections that the Region guarantees towards the centre and south of the continent, represents a fundamental strategic opportunity», Fedriga stressed, adding that the project must be supported not only by Italy and Europe, but also by the United States.
According to the governor, growing international tensions make it necessary to activate alternative corridors that can guarantee economic stability, preventing crises from blocking the national production system. During the meeting with Jimmy Panetta, the forthcoming visit to Italy by a delegation of members of Congress was announced. Fedriga, in his capacity as president of the Conference of Regions, invited them to take part in a meeting with regional presidents to consolidate a relationship between the United States and Italy based on friendship and shared democratic values.
