TRIESTE – Giacomo Di Patrizi is the new president of FerCargo. The assembly of the association representing railway undertakings operating in freight transport elected the manager to lead the organisation and also appointed to the Executive Committee, among others, Maurizio Cociancich, CEO of Adriafer, and Guido Porta, board member of Fuori Muro and board member of InRail.
The assembly was held yesterday in Milan and was called to renew the association’s main offices. Di Patrizi, currently vice-president of FHP – F2i Holding Portuale, sole shareholder of CFI Compagnia Ferroviaria Italiana, thus returns to lead FerCargo after having been the association’s first president in 2009 and having held the position for three consecutive terms.
His career in the rail freight sector began in the Ferrovie dello Stato group, where between 2004 and 2007 he was chief executive officer of FS Cargo. He later founded CFI Compagnia Ferroviaria Italiana, a company he led as chief executive officer from 2007 to 2025, also contributing to the creation of FerCargo.
In his first speech as president, Di Patrizi described the current situation as «perhaps the worst moment experienced in the last twenty years» by the rail freight sector since the start of liberalisation. According to the new president, companies are facing a particularly difficult context, worsened by the numerous infrastructure works on the national railway network, which are causing interruptions, longer routes, higher operating costs and, in many cases, train cancellations.
Di Patrizi highlighted that the sector has been suffering the consequences of these critical issues for more than two years without adequate forms of economic support. Traffic losses, estimated at more than 15% over the three-year period, are in fact heavily affecting the revenues and margins of railway undertakings. «Losses in terms of volumes, now estimated at more than 15% over the three-year period, and consequently in the revenues and margins of companies, have now reached unsustainable levels», the new president said, stressing his intention to work together with the other sector representatives to obtain greater attention and support measures from the institutions.
The assembly also appointed Maurizio Cociancich, Alessio Muciaccia, Guido Porta, Marco Terranova and Emanuele Vender as members of the Executive Committee. Finally, thanks were extended to outgoing president Mauro Pessano for the work carried out and the commitment shown over the last two years at the head of the association.
