TRIESTE – The force majeure period declared by QatarEnergy on liquefied natural gas supplies to Italy is being extended. Edison has announced that it has received a new notification from the Qatari group: it is unable to supply the Adriatic LNG terminal in Porto Viro, Rovigo, affecting another four LNG cargoes scheduled until the beginning of September.
With this update, the total number of cargoes affected by force majeure in the period between April and the beginning of September 2026 rises to 21, for a total volume of around 2.7 billion cubic metres of natural gas.
The development comes in a scenario already marked by uncertainty on the international LNG market. As reported by AdriaPorts in a previous article on the Adriatic LNG regasification terminal, global energy tensions are affecting the availability of supplies, although without currently putting national supply security at risk. Edison states that as of 30 June it had managed to replace 14 of the 21 missing cargoes, equivalent to around 1.3 billion cubic metres of natural gas. The company confirms that it is able to procure alternative gas for all its customers and fully meet its commercial commitments.
The long-term contract between Edison and QatarEnergy, in force since 2009, provides for the supply of 6.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year to Italy for a period of 25 years. No indication has currently been provided as to when the force majeure situation may end.
