TRIESTE – An accident involving a heavy goods vehicle and a van occurred early this morning on the A4 motorway between Meolo and San Donà di Piave, heading towards Trieste. The collision happened shortly after 5:00 am at kilometre 421, near the municipality of Fossalta di Piave, on the three-lane section. According to an initial reconstruction being examined by the traffic police, an articulated lorry began to swerve and ended its run against the central concrete barriers. A van travelling in the same direction and overtaking at the time was also involved in the impact. Two people suffered minor injuries, both occupants of the van.

The safety barriers proved crucial, preventing the HGV from crossing into the opposite carriageway and avoiding more serious consequences on the Venice-bound side. At the time of the accident traffic was flowing normally, but queues later formed towards Trieste to allow recovery of the HGV and the clearing of debris from both carriageways.

Traffic is currently running on two lanes instead of three along the affected stretch. Due to the damage caused by the impact, around ten New Jersey barriers will need to be moved and removed, with works expected to last several hours. Drivers travelling on the A4 from Venice are therefore advised to use caution and reduce speed.
