TRIESTE – Rijeka Gateway is expanding its intermodal network with the launch of a new direct rail link between the Rijeka container terminal and Cargo Center Graz, in Austria.
Following the arrival of the second train in recent days, the service is now entering regular operation with a weekly frequency.
The new connection is described as an important step in the development of rail traffic in Rijeka’s hinterland and represents Rijeka Gateway’s first direct operational link – the A.P. Moller-Maersk terminal – with the Austrian market, one of Central Europe’s main logistics hubs.
The initiative was announced by both Cargo Center Graz and Rijeka Gateway, which highlighted how the new service helps strengthen the logistics corridor between the Adriatic and Central Europe, offering customers more efficient and reliable transport solutions. According to Cargo Center Graz, demand recorded in the first few weeks confirms the potential of the new rail connection. Available export capacity is already fully used, while space remains available for import traffic.
For Rijeka Gateway, the new link makes it possible to increase the share of goods transported by rail, improving reliability, flexibility and transit times towards Austria and the markets of Central and Eastern Europe.
«The launch of our first rail connection with Rijeka Gateway represents an important milestone in strengthening our intermodal network», said Robert Brugger of Cargo Center Graz. «This new connection expands access to one of the most advanced container terminals in the Adriatic and creates new opportunities for efficient, reliable and sustainable transport in Central and Eastern Europe».
