TRIESTE – With 54% of cargo moved by rail, the Port of Trieste stands out as a European benchmark for sustainability and intermodality.

This figure — well above not only the Italian average but also that of major European ports — was presented today in Naples during the launch of the 12th “Sea Economy Report” by SRM – Intesa Sanpaolo’s research center. Trieste’s rail modal share places it ahead of key ports such as Bremerhaven (46.4%), Hamburg (37.2%), Rotterdam (10%), and Valencia (7%).

Trieste’s performance is even more significant when compared to the European Union’s targets: at least 30% of freight on rail by 2030, and 50% by 2050.

Trieste has already surpassed both thresholds, confirming its position as one of Europe’s most advanced ports in terms of green logistics and intermodal integration.

“Trieste has already exceeded these thresholds. We knew our rail freight figures were strong, but comparing them with other European ports shows just how significant this result is internationally,” emphasized Antonio Gurrieri, Special Commissioner of the Port Authority. “It’s a figure that strengthens Trieste’s role and gives Italy a stronger voice in the European debate on sustainable logistics.”
