TRIESTE – The monitoring table convened in Rome by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy has once again put the spotlight on the future of the former Wartsila plant in Bagnoli della Rosandra, Trieste. Innoway, the company formed by MSC Group and Innofreight with the aim of producing rail wagons, has confirmed its industrial and employment targets but announced a rescheduling of planned investments.

The news has raised concerns within the Region. Alessia Rosolen, Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Regional Councillor for Labour, asked the company to clarify in detail the new operations and the timeline for interventions, stressing the binding nature of the Programme Agreement. According to Rosolen, transparency and ongoing dialogue with trade unions are necessary to protect workers and the territory.

Regional Councillor for Productive Activities Sergio Emidio Bini, speaking via videoconference, also pressed for urgent implementation of commitments. On the infrastructure front, he recalled the 15 million euros allocated by the Region for service and connection rail links, essential for the operation of the new plant.
Meanwhile, the Invitalia call for projects in Trieste’s complex industrial crisis areas is expected soon, with 15 million euros in ministerial resources. The Region and the Ministry also reiterated their expectation that Innoway move its registered office to Trieste, a choice considered highly symbolic.

In recent weeks, Innoway completed the first 22 rail wagons at its plant. The reindustrialization project of the site (launched by the joint venture between MSC Group and Innofreight) began by absorbing the 255 redundant Wartsila workers and, in early July, producing the first rail wagons.
Innoway’s industrial plan aims to reach annual production of 1,000 wagons and 3,000 bogies by 2027. In the near future, the reconfiguration of the industrial site and the construction of the public rail network, to be built by the Coselag Consortium with direct regional funding of 15 million euros, will also begin.
